A human life or career coach

What it is
One-to-one conversations with a coach, usually by video or phone. Coaches differ in training, approach and specialty, so ask how they work before you start.
Rough cost
Commonly about $75 to $250 a session, often sold as monthly packages of about $300 to $1,500 or more. The 2025 ICF Global Coaching Study put the average fee for a one-hour session at about $234 worldwide.
Time
Sessions usually last 45 to 60 minutes. How many you have depends on you and your coach.
What you leave with
It depends on the coach. Usually clearer next steps, and the support of someone who has followed your thinking across several conversations.
The better choice when
You want a person who gets to know your circumstances, responds to you in real time and holds you accountable between sessions, and the cost fits your budget.

An ikigai test or quiz

What it is
A short online quiz built on a four-circle diagram: what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs and what you can be paid for. That diagram began as Andrés Zuzunaga’s purpose diagram in 2011 and was relabelled “ikigai” in a 2014 blog post by Marc Winn. In Japanese, ikigai describes a sense of a life worth living.
Rough cost
Usually free. For example, JobCannon’s ikigai quiz is free, with no sign-up.
Time
A few minutes. JobCannon’s quiz has 12 questions and takes about 2 minutes.
What you leave with
A result showing which part of the diagram your answers point to, with ideas to reflect on. JobCannon describes its quiz as a self-reflection tool rather than a validated psychological test.
The better choice when
You want a quick, free way to start thinking about what matters to you, right now.

The University of Michigan course on Coursera

What it is
“Finding Purpose and Meaning In Life: Living for What Matters Most,” a self-paced online course taught by Professor Vic Strecher of the University of Michigan. Four modules of video lectures, reflective exercises, discussion prompts and short graded quizzes. Learners rate it 4.8 out of 5 on Coursera.
Rough cost
Enrolling on Coursera is free. Since August 2025, Coursera’s free option is a preview of the first module of nearly every course; full access and the certificate need a payment, a Coursera Plus subscription (about $59 a month) or financial aid. Michigan Online sells a certificate version for $149.
Time
About 7 hours on Coursera (Michigan Online says about 8), at your own pace.
What you leave with
An introduction to the science and philosophy of purpose, exercises on your values, a draft purpose statement and “be” and “do” goals, and a certificate if you pay for one.
The better choice when
You want a university introduction to the research and ideas behind purpose, you like learning from lectures, and you want to try it before paying anything.

A general AI assistant (ChatGPT or Claude)

What it is
A general-purpose AI assistant. You decide what to ask, in what order, and when you’re done.
Rough cost
Both have free plans. Paid plans include ChatGPT Go at $8 a month, ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, and Claude Pro at $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly).
Time
As much or as little as you like.
What you leave with
Whatever you ask it for: ideas, questions to reflect on, a draft plan. You set the structure and decide what to keep.
The better choice when
You want quick, flexible help with a specific question for little or no cost, or you already have a method and want a thinking partner.

PurposeLife

What it is
An eight-step purpose discovery program with an AI coach. It uses the same method tested in a randomized controlled study with 89 adults.
Rough cost
$149, paid once: all eight steps, the AI coach and 12 months of access. No subscription, and a 14-day money-back guarantee.
Time
You work at your own pace. Some steps are reflection in the app; others ask you to talk to people or try something in everyday life. Your work is saved between visits.
What you leave with
A long-term purposeful goal you chose yourself and a road map with dates, next steps and people who can help. Along the way: your top five character strengths with examples from your own life, a shortlist of possibilities and what you learned from trying one.
The better choice when
You want a complete method that takes you from reflection to a dated plan, with research behind it and a coach to guide each step, for a single payment.

How is PurposeLife different?

ChatGPT and Claude can help you explore ideas. PurposeLife guides you through a complete, research-tested method for discovering your purpose.

The method was tested in a randomized controlled study of 89 adults aged 50 to 85 for Dr. Levi Brackman’s doctoral research (Australian Catholic University, 2017). Adults who received the program developed a stronger sense of purpose than those who did not receive it during the study. The benefits were still present three months after the program ended.

The coach draws on guidance developed from the research and experience with people who used earlier versions of the program. It asks about your own answers rather than telling you what your purpose is.

Can you combine them?

Yes. A quiz or the free six-question purpose check is a quick way to see where you are today. The University of Michigan course adds background on the research and ideas. PurposeLife takes you from reflection to a long-term goal and road map. A human coach can then help you act on that plan, and a general AI assistant can help with a specific question along the way.
